I eventually found that it was a program. Anyways, the life saver was the tip on doing the refresh from safe mode (shift click + restart) as I had tried a refresh earlier with no effect. Best technique: Take an image backup on a regular basis (weekly). A miracle! Let us know in the comments! I've used System Restore numerous times since 2002 and it's extremely rare for it not to work in my experience.
